Instructions
Biscuits
Preheat oven to 450˚F(232˚C).
Into a large bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Using a couple of butter knives or a pastry blender to cut the shortening into the dry ingredients until sandy and pea-sized.
Slowly add the milk and form into a dough.
Turn the dough out on to the countertop and gently roll to 1/2" thick.
Use a round biscuit and push it straight into the dough. Do not twist.
Place the pucks of dough into a greased cast iron pan.
Bake for 10-12 minutes. Serve warm with butter.
Chocolate Gravy
Into a medium saucepan add the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, salt, and milk.
Use a whisk to combine.
On medium heat bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
Remove from heat and add the vanilla and butter. Whisk to combine.
Pour over hot split biscuits.
